Elizabeth Solomon began her career 25 years ago with a focus in human rights. She began her career in journalism and mass communications. She was awarded for excellence in journalism in print, radio, and television. Elizabeth still currently writes a column for the Newsday Trinidad and has written for the African, Caribbean, & Pacific Courier, a diplomatic magazine. She was a Visiting Research Fellow for the Institute of International Relations, UWI and is now an Adjunct Lecturer, with the International Human Rights Clinic of the UWI Faculty of Law.
Elizabeth worked with the United Nations in Peace Building & Conflict Prevention. During her time with the UN, she was an integral part with the unification of the Bosnian police force, which resulted in a joint peacekeeping taskforce. She continued working with the UN for 17 years with assignments in Kosovo, Bosnia, Somalia, Guyana and at UN Headquarters in New York.
Her commitment to human rights and conflict resolution is evident and palpable. On leaving the United Nations, she returned to the Institute of International Relations as a research fellow. She is focusing on expanding the dispute resolution and conflict prevention methodology with a direct impact on the Caribbean. With a strong belief in a multidisciplinary approach, Elizabeth is still dedicated to changing the world and creating real change. As a proud graduate of the University of the West Indies, she was equipped with all the skills and knowledge to succeed in the world.
She holds a BA in Journalism from the University of the West Indies, and a Postgraduate degree in International Relations from the Institute of International Relations- UWI. She went on to attain a Bachelor of Law at the University of London, and completed postgraduate work in Human Rights at the Institute of Social Studies.
In addition to her work at the Institute of International Relations, she is the Executive Director of the Dispute Resolution Centre in Trinidad and serves on the Mediation Board of Trinidad and Tobago. She volunteers as the Executive Director of the Caribbean Centre for Human Rights and in her free time, she enjoys karate and sailing. She now resides in Trinidad and Tobago.
