Dr. Mauro Silva Ruiz is Head of the Professional Master´s Program in Environmental Management and Sustainability at Nove de Julho University (Uninove), Sao Paulo, Brazil.

A geologist with 35-years experience, he holds a PhD in Geography from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1996 (concentration area: Natural Resource Planning).

He is presently working as a professor and researcher at Universidade Nove de Julho – Uninove. Prior to Uninove, he worked for the Institute for Technological Research of Sao Paulo State (IPT) for 30 years in the areas of Mineral Research, Mining information System, Mineral Economics, Technology Economics, Innovation Habitats, and Technological Forecasting and Foresight. From an academic standpoint, his major area of expertise are in environmental conflict management, and has also carried out studies and oriented graduate students (Master´s) on waste management. He is a fellow of the Leadership for Environment and Development Program and a member of the editorial board of the Environmental Management and Sustainability Journal.

His PhD dissertation title is: SMCRA’s underground mining regulations: lessons learned from the Implementation of the Rules and Regulations Pertaining to Planned Subsidence in Illinois. (Advisor: Benedykt Diziegielewski; his doctoral dissertation was supported by a scholarship provides by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPES, Brazil).

Some of his major accomplishments throughout his professional life have been the discovery of an industrial sand seam in Analandia municipality by he and a senior geologist, both from Technological Research of Sao Paulo State (IPT), São Paulo State, Brazil, in 1983. Presently, it is one mining of Sibelco Mining Ltd., Cisper Group producing sand for foundry and glass. He also took part of a group of geologists and mining engineers that helped a mining entrepreneur to develop a small manganese mining project, which has been underway since 1984. He is the head of a team that carried out technical studies for the implantation of the Technological Park “Francisco Sciarra” in Londrina, Parana State, Brazil. He assisted with the implantation and coordination of a MBA in “Environmental Management and Sustainability” (2005 – 2014) which graduated around 100 students at Maua Institute of Technology. He is also a member of a team that created the Professional Master´s Program in “Environmental Management and Sustainability” (2011 – ongoing) at Uninove that is presently under his direction.

Within academia, Dr. Ruiz takes part in 3 research groups: i) Sustainability Management; ii) Sustainability and Innovation; and iii) Smart and Sustainable Cities. He is involved with issues in which he has oriented master´s students in environmental conflict management, electrical and electronic waste management, cooking oil and waste management, and Photovoltaic solar energy. He is a Professor of Environmental Conflicts Management, Technical Barriers to Trade, Sustainability and Innovation, Urban Mobility, Natural Resource Planning, Principles of Research, Treatment of solid waste and effluents, and Environmental Education. He is also responsible for the International Module entitled “Learning and Practice in International Experience in Environmental Management and Sustainability” carried out in partnership with Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.

When Dr. Ruiz has time outside research and academia, he enjoys reading and going jogging. He is a Member of the Brazilian Geology Society, and resides in Rio Claro, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
